Jerry Allen Gaines was born on June 11, 1935 in Oklahoma City, and was the eldest child of Ellis and Elsie Gaines. He passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018 at the age of 83. In 1960, Jerry earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma.

He then moved his family to Pueblo, Colorado, where he taught science and math in the Pueblo County Rural School system for three years. In 1963, Jerry returned to Oklahoma to become principal of the rural school at Sparks, his childhood home. The next six years were spent teaching, coaching, building a new home east of Sparks, and getting a master’s degree from Central State University.

In 1966, Jerry was hired by the Prague school system to teach science and to serve as junior-senior high school principal. In 1973, Jerry went to work as a chemist for Star Buildings in Oklahoma City. He then worked for Wolverine Tube Co. and Allen Bradley-TDK, both located in Shawnee.

He returned to teaching in 1994, to teach science at Davenport High School and retired in 1997. During those years, Jerry was president of the Prague Classroom Teachers Association. He also served three two-year terms as chairman of the Lincoln County Democrat Central Committee.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; survivors include his wife of (60) years, Patricia (Batchelor) Gaines, daughter, Terri Branson and son, Allen Gaines, (3) grandchildren, Ryan Gaines, Tyler Gaines, and Madison Gaines. A graveside service will be held at the White Dove Cemetery in Sparks, Oklahoma, at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2018. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
