Obituary for Jesse B. “J. B.” Marcum Blountville, Tenn. /Big Stone Gap, Va.
Jesse B. Marcum, known to friends as “J.B.,” passed away on Aug. 29, 2018 in Florida at the age of 82. J. B. was born in Big Stone Gap, Va.
He attended East Stone Gap and Big Stone Gap High Schools. After high school, he began his career in the U. S. Air Force, where he served in Vietnam and retired from active duty after 21 years of service in 1974. He attended the University of Ohio and furthered his career as a civilian government civil servant.
He worked for Midland Life Insurance Co. at Lowry Air Force Base, at the Denver Finance Center, the F.A.A. in Memphis, Tenn. and finally retiring again as a civil servant while working with Unisys Corporation in Hope Hull, Ala. J. B. was an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman, and loved his family so much!
He served on boards of many organizations and was a volunteer for mission’s work at Emory United Methodist Church in Kingsport, Tenn. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Ann (Dillon) and Jake Squire Marcum; his sister and her husband, Doris and Lonnie James; his brother and his wife, Jake “Junior” and wife Brenda Marcum; and his brother, Darrell Marcum.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Margaret “Suzanne” Marcum; son, Kenneth Lee Marcum; twin daughters, Karen Rutland and husband Jeff Rutland, and Sharen Reardon and husband Terry Reardon; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; many adopted and foster grandchildren; brother-in-law, Carl Jessee and his wife Shirley; and sister-in-law, Joyce White Jessee. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ray Amos officiating. Military rites, accorded by the U. S. Air Force Honors Team and local V. F. W. and D. A. V. posts, will precede the Celebration of Life service.
Pallbearers will be: Joseph Marcum, Nathaniel Marcum, Terry Reardon, Jr., Terry Reardon, Sr., Crystal Marie Colmehero, Matthew Reardon, Thomas Marcum and Jeff Rutland. In lieu of flowers, it was Jesse’s wish that memorials be made to the: Alzheimer’s Association, P. O. Box 96011, Washington, D. C. 20090-6011, St Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to a Veteran’s organizations of one’s choice.
