Obituary for Mr. Robert “Shorty” Pippin Big Stone Gap, VA Robert J (Shorty) Pippin, 94, passed away at home Tuesday October 30, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was a member of East Stone Gap United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Navy.
He retired from Westmoreland Coal Company and was a member of UMWA. Shorty enjoyed camping, square dancing, baseball, watching the Atlanta Braves and always had time to spend with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Cora Kent Pippin and Robert Pierce Pippin, and one brother Charles Elmer Pippin.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years Myrtle Donelson Pippin, one son Robert (Bobby) Pippin and wife Debbie of Big Stone Gap, VA, two grandchildren Travis Pippin of Lake Wiley SC , Tracy (Keith) Fannon of Big Stone Gap, VA, and two great-grandchildren Rachel and Abby Fannon. The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia caregivers Diane Rose and Barbara Mosier. The visitation will be at Holding Funeral Home from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov 1) with funeral services following in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Brad Stapleton officiating.
Burial will be on Friday (Nov 2) in American Legion Cemetery at 11 a.m. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:30 to go in procession. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
