Obituary for Joan M. Smith Joan Dearing McKendrick Smith, age 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 9, 2018. She was born on December 8, 1928, the only child of David and Vera McKendrick. She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah surrounded by a large, loving, extended family.

She graduated from Salt Lake City High School in June of 1945, and from the University of Utah in June of 1950, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors. In 1966 Joan and her family relocated to the Marietta, GA area. For more than 20 years, Joan enriched the lives of hundreds of children as an elementary school teacher in Cobb County, GA.

She also worked for many years as a hostess at Schillings on the Square in Marietta. Joan was a proud member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, and the Cobb/Marietta Retired Teachers Association. Earlier in life she was an accomplished skier and a licensed member of the Ski Patrol.

After her retirement in 1994, Joan visited numerous sites around the world with the Cobb Travel Club. She was also an active member of St. Teresa Episcopal Church in Acworth, Georgia, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the choral guild. Joan was also a gifted needlewoman who knitted hundreds of hats for adult cancer patients.

Visitation with family will be held from 10 AM to 11 AM at Mayes Ward-Dobbins, Powder Springs, GA on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. Services will follow at 11 AM. Joan will rest in peace at Sweet Water Memorial Gardens in Hiram, GA.

After being married for more than 25 years, Joan was blessed with four children: David Smith of Mableton, GA; Kayla Smith Abercrombie of Doraville, GA; Buster (and Debi) Smith of Hiram, GA; and Paul (and Inga) Smith of Wexford, PA. She is survived by four grandchildren, Mat (and Beth) Smith, Trudy (and Walter) Cain, Ford Smith, and Isley Smith; and four great-grandchildren: Tay Cain, Chyna Cain, Akhim Cain, and Mason Smith. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the St. Teresa Episcopal Church.
