JoAnn Oakes Hunter, age 80, of Cedar Hill, passed away Monday, May 13, 2019 peacefully at her home after an extended illness. Visitation will be held at the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 from 3-8pm. The Rosary will be recited Wednesday evening at 7pm.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cedar Hill on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 10am with Father Anthony Lopez as Celebrant. Following the Mass interment will take place at St. Michael’s Catholic Church Cemetery with Kenton Deitch, David Ball, Kevin Ramsey, Hunter Duncan, Joshua Hunter and Matt Chowning serving as pallbearers. Mrs. Hunter was born December 18, 1938 in Louisville, KY, to the late Arvin and Helen Elizabeth Vincent Oakes, Sr

She became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1972. In 1982 she graduated from Austin Peay State University as a Registered Nurse. She worked at Jesse Holman Jones Hospital, now NorthCrest Medical Center, for 35 years.

She worked in Women’s Services at the hospital providing loving care to countless mothers and newborns. Mrs. Hunter was an excellent cook and seamstress who enjoyed bowling, being an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Cedar Hill FCE Club. She most enjoyed all gatherings and holidays with family.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Hunter is preceded in death by her step-mother, Lou Ethel Oakes, her son-in-law, Jerry McClain, her sisters, Jane Orrender and Jean Barrett, her brother Arvin “Juney” Oakes, Jr. and her sweet friend, Brenda Cotter. Mrs. Hunter is survived by her husband of 64 years, Edward Carmack “Macky” Hunter, Jr. and her children, Janet McClain of Springfield, Joy (Fred) Ramsey of Harriman, Mack (Sheila) Hunter of Clarksville, Mike (Tara) Hunter of Joelton and Beth Duncan of Ashland City. She was “Granny Jo” to her grandchildren, Kerry (Kenton) Deitch, Haley (David) Ball, Kevin (Alicia) Ramsey, Hunter Duncan, Shelby Hunter and Joshua Hunter and her great-grandchildren, Kiersten, Kenley and Samuel Deitch and Benjamin Ball.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the JoAnn Hunter Memorial Scholarship for Nursing Students, the St. Michael’s Cemetery Fund or the charity of your choice. Any donations may be sent in c/o Austin & Bell. Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of these arrangements.
