John Anthony Kooi, 67, of Franklin passed away Friday, May 25, 2018 in an Asheville hospital. He was born in Muskegon, Michigan to the late James Norman and Theresa Mary Bottoms and grew up in Anna Maria Island, Florida. Mr. Kooi was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Vietnam War.

He worked at Walmart for 19 years. He loved the ocean, surfing and animals. He was a member of Trinity Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years Jessie Kooi; a son, Shawn Kooi (Azania Opio) of Anna Maria Island, FL; a grandson, Makio Koi of Anna Maria Island, FL; sisters, Jennifer Bottoms of Anna Maria Island, FL and Julie McGuire (John) of Ackworth, GA; brother, Jimmy Kooi who was a POW in Vietnam and several nieces and nephews and great‑nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 1:00 pm in the chapel of Bryant‑Grant Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. J. D. Watson officiating.

Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. The family will receive friends from 12:00 ‑ 1:00 pm prior the service at the funeral home. Online condolences are available at bryantgrantfuneralhome.com.
