John Edwin Carpenter, Jr.,83, it is with great sadness that the family of John (Jack) Carpenter, Jr. announces his passing. He passed naturally on July 4, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family, along with the amazing support of hospice. John was a graduate of Putnam High School, long time resident of Springfield and retired from the Springfield Fire Department.
He joined the Army Reserves in Westfield, MA, he was in the 104th Infantry 26 Division, then later joined the Air Force where he was in the 40th ARS Refueling Squad, serving in Kansas and Greenland during the Korean Conflict. John forever had a passion for planes following his time in the service. He was a long time member of the Galaxy Club out of WAFB and was so proud to fly on a C5 around the country with them.
He was a fifty-one year member of the Esoteric-Sherwood Lodge and was honored to be a Mason. He was a given the High Honor of Worshipful Master three times, he received the Dwight Keyes Award, Veterans Medal and the Joseph Warren Medal to celebrate his Fifty-years to dedication. He became a Shriner in 1967 and became a Highland Bagpiper.
During his many years of devotion at Mittineague Methodist Church he enjoyed volunteering at the Big E and open pantry. During his retirement years he had a small engine repair shop in his home garage. You could stop by for repairs, advice and knowledge.
John was there for all who entered and would help in anyway he could. He had a large number of friends and people in the community who were touched by his presence and whom he loved. He will be dearly missed by many!
John was predeceased by his son, Keith Carpenter, his partner and best friend of thirty-three years, Alice Frasco, and his brother Conrad Carpenter. He leaves behind his children & Alice’s children who loved him as their own Father. Kimberly Duffany, Kevin Carpenter, Ronald Frasco and his wife Jean, Jeffery Frasco and his husband Karl Nyberg, Gail Savoy, David Frasco and his wife Laura and his sisters Marjorie Dostie and Gail Horvarth.
John was a loving and nurturing Grandfather and Great Grandfather. Calling hours will be Friday, July 13th from 10:00AM – 12:00PM, followed by a funeral Service at 12:00PM at Toomey O’Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield, Massachusetts, followed by an interment with full military honors at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street Agawam, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s memory to Shriners Children’s Hospital, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or to Trinity Health of New England at Home, 200 Hillside, Suite 107, West Springfield, MA 01089.
