Gary H. Thomas, 69, formerly of Westfield, passed away at his home in Little River, SC, Thursday, August 30, 2018. He was born in Springfield, MA on November 13, 1948 to the late Howard F. and Doris I. Thomas. He graduated from West Springfield High School in 1966 and served his nation proudly during the Vietnam conflict as a U.S. Navy Seabee with NMCB 62 from 1969-1970.

Upon discharge from the Navy, Gary returned to work as an auto mechanic, eventually owning his own garage and towing business in Agawam, Gary’s Towing. He later transitioned to a successful career as an insurance adjuster for Commerce Insurance Company where he worked until his retirement. He was an avid golfer returning to the game in his late 30’s and continuing until just a few months before his passing.

He was a member of Tekoa Country Club in Westfield and continued to play in South Carolina. He was involved in the Classic Car Clubs of SC showing his 1937 Ford coupe and was an active member with VFW Post 7288, Calabash, NC. Gary leaves his loving wife of 49 years, Carol (Goyette) and his son Jonathan (Karen) of Randolph, MA.

He was predeceased by his son Charles (CJ) in 2016 and also leaves his brother Scott (Linda) of Westfield, MA and sister Mary Jane Carey (Craig) of Palm Cay, Florida as well as his nephews and many friends. His three grandchildren, Jason, Devon and Alexander will miss their beloved Pa dearly. Calling hours will be held Friday September 7, 2018 from 10 AM – 12 PM at TOOMEY-OBRIEN Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St., West Springfield, MA with burial following at 1PM at The Massachusetts Veterans’ Cemetery, Agawam, MA.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to South Carolina Hospice, Lee Funeral Home, Little River, SC and VFW Post 7288 of Calabash, NC for their kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Gary’s memory to The American Cancer Society.
