Obituary for John “Jack” Rooney John (Jack) Edward Rooney of Amenia, NY, passed away on August 28, 2018 at his home in Amenia, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old. Jack was born in Norwalk, CT on October 24, 1928 to Mary Mahoney and Frederick Thomas Rooney.
Jack came to live in Amenia at the age of seven, after the deaths of, first his mother and, a few years later, his father. He and his two brothers and sister were sent to live with different relatives; Jack was taken in and raised by his mother’s cousin, Margaret O’Connor Thompson and her husband, Ben. He attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Amenia High School.
Jack proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in 1948 and in 1952 when he was called again to duty, receiving his Honorable Discharge in January 1953. On October 25, 1952 he married Betty Galleher of Falls Church, VA at St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington, DC. Jack met his wife when he worked for the main post office in Washington, DC and she worked at Fort Myer, a U.S. Army post in Arlington, Virginia.
They moved to Amenia in 1955 to raise their family when he was offered a position in the Amenia post office where he was the Rural Mail Carrier until his retirement in 1983. Jack enjoyed a few years of retirement and then took a part-time job at the Amenia Transfer station until he finally retired again in 2006 at the age of 78. He was a former member of the Amenia Fire Company.
Jack’s biggest passions in life were his dogs (he was never without one by his side), music (especially Frank Sinatra), cooking (to the delight of his family and friends, gardening (his dahlias were renowned) and all sports. Jack was a voracious reader, loved history and was a movie buff from childhood to his final days on earth. But above all else, he was forever and totally devoted to his family!
Jack is survived by his children Kevin Rooney, Maureen Rooney, Carol Rooney Cummings and Michael Rooney; 10 grandchildren, Kerry Rooney, Daire Rooney Corcoran, Caitrin Rooney Harney, Brendan Rooney, Kealan Rooney, John Rooney, Adelaide Rooney, Siobhan Rooney, Sean Rooney and Darragh Rooney; step-grandchildren Joad Bowman and Arianne Miller; nine great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother, Terence Rooney of Norwalk, CT; his sister-in-law, Lois Ann Rooney of Virginia Beach, VA; and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and friends. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Betty; his son, Dennis Rooney; his parents, Frederick and Mary Rooney; Ben and Margaret Thompson who raised him; his brother, Capt.
Frederick T. Rooney of Virginia Beach, VA and his sister, Margaret Ann Rooney Scanlon of Norwalk, CT; brothers-in-law, James Scanlon and Francis “Buddy” Marsden; and sisters-in-law, Doris Marsden and Donna Rooney. Calling hours will be held at Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY on Tuesday, September 4th from 4 to 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 5th at 10 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 4 Lavelle Road, Amenia, NY.
