Obituary for John H. “Jack” Schlegel John H. “Jack” Schlegel 81, of Estero, FL and a former resident of So. Yarmouth, MA died November 5, 2018 at his residence. Jack was born in Everett, MA and raised in Malden, was the son of the late Herbert and Isabelle Schlegel.

He had been a resident of Estero, FL for the past 16 years. He was a graduate of both Salem State College and Boston University where he received his degrees in Education. He began his teaching career in 1959 and taught at numerous schools throughout Malden.

He was the former varsity basketball coach for Malden Catholic High School, their assistant varsity football coach and longtime head varsity basketball coach for Malden High School. He retired from teaching and coaching in 1985. His passion for kids, families and his community was felt at the Y.M.C.A.

in Malden where he served as the Chairman of the Board from 1995 thru 1999, serving families in the Malden, Medford and Everett areas. He lead numerous fundraising campaigns to expand services and to replace the facilities. In 1972, Jack ’s second career began in the insurance business when he opened his own agency in Malden, the John H. Schlegel Insurance agency.

The company, now known as Schlegel and Schlegel Insurance, is currently operating in West Yarmouth by his son, Paul. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Norma L. Schlegel of Estero, FL; his three sons, John H. Schlegel, Jr. of Park City, UT, Paul F. Schlegel of West Yarmouth, MA and Steven R. Schlegel of Miramar, FL along with daughter Pamela L. Blackwell of Bonita Springs, FL; brother, Herbert Schlegel and sisters, Karen North and Arlene Schlegel and 7 adoring grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated in Estero, FL and burial services in the future will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lynn, MA.
