Obituary for Mr. John J. Fleming Jr Mr. John Judge Fleming Jr., age 90, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 15, 2018. He was born on March 26, 1928 to John and Erma (Micho) Fleming in Lansing.

John attended Lansing Eastern High School where he was captain of the basketball team and Individual State Track and Field Champion for the 100-yard dash. John joined the US Army and served his country during WWII in Japan. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education & Health and Recreation.

He was a member of the MSU Varsity Track and Field Team. In 1952, John married the former Mary Lynne Porter and she preceded him in death. John went on to receive his Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University in 1965.

He was an educator and coach at Fremont High School, Mona Shores High School and South Shores Junior High School. He taught earth science, physical education and coached basketball, track and field, and other sports. He enjoyed reading, bird watching, nature and was an accomplished woodworker.

He was an avid golfer and fitness enthusiast throughout his life. John is survived by his children, Leslie Fleming of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and Glen (Ardith) Fleming of Portland, OR; grandchildren, John Carlos DeLong of Bloomfield Hills, and Tabitha and April Fleming of Portland; and special friend, Jane Hunt. A Memorial Service Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 19 at 2PM at Pioneer Park Picnic Lodge (1563 N. Scenic Dr., 49445).

A picnic will take place immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to American Heart Association/American Stroke Association or Arthritis Foundation. Arrangements by The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., 49444, 231-798-1100.
