John. J. Russo of Rockaway Park passed away on March 4, 2019. Born in Coney Island on March 15, 1930 to the late Anthony and Grace.

John began his long and extensive working career by delivering ice via horse and buggy to fisherman in Sheepshead Bay for his father’s fishing business. He then went onto to work for the New York City Department of Sanitation, while working there his co workers dared him to become a hairdresser, he took them up on their dare and became a hairdresser , which his did for many years, He then pursued a career in Real Estate working for Filmore Real Estate Company. When his career in Real Estate ended, he them started his own construction business based out of the Bronx.

John was a long time member and Past President of the Mill Bergen Lions Club as well as a member of the Rockaway Art Alliance Club. He was a man of many talents and interests. He was kind, generous to others, a person who enjoyed telling stories and very loving to his family.

At the age of 75 he received his Associates Degree from Kingsboro Community College while he was working there. He then went on to further his education and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the age of 80 from the College of Staten Island, graduating Summa Cum Laude. John was an author, had a poem he wrote published, he authored a book about his life growing up and he was a artist, having his works displayed in various exhibitions, In his final days he donated his time and talents painting for employees and residents of Eger Nursing Home where some of his art is displayed on their walls.

He is survived by his two daughters Patricia Caris and Christina Campo, his son in-laws Harry and Anthony. He was especially proud of his three grandchildren and their accomplishments in life; his granddaughter Justine Campo who became a Pharmacist, his granddaughter Demi Campo who became a Registered Nurse and his grandson Alexander Caris who proudly serves in the United States Navy studying to become a Nuclear Electronic Technician. He is also survived by his sister Annabelle Scarola.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. at the John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals 28 Eltingville Blvd. Staten Island, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday beginning at 11:15 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Entombment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
