Richard J. Gillings, 93 of Eltingville passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019, at Staten Island University Hospital South. Born October 20, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Richard Gillings and the late Winifred Neumann Gillings. Richard served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

During a typhoon in the middle of the Atlantic he was severely injured securing the outer hatches while looking for other sailors. He was a foreman for the NYC Department of Sanitation and in his free time he loved to sing and play the harmonica. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to Melina.

Loving father of Robert, Stephen, Elaine, Melissa, Richard and Diane. Dear father in law of Richard. Devoted grandfather to Jordan, Jennifer Jamie, Max, David and Alyssa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2019 at St Clare Church, located at 110 Nelson Ave. SI. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 30th and from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 31st at the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
