Jack received his early education in Staples until 1941 when the family moved to Glendive. He then attended Sacred Heart School and Dawson County High School, graduating with the class of 1949. A couple years after graduation Jack enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Following his military service Jack moved back to Glendive and married his high school sweetheart, Adele Lovaas. They were united in marriage on June 12, 1954 in Glendive and to this union three children were born: Doug, Jackie, and Wendy. Shortly thereafter Jack began his career as an engineer for Northern Pacific which later became Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

At the railroad, he was affectionately known as “Calico Jack” for his colorful hats. Jack also served for over twenty years on the West Glendive Volunteer Fire Department. During his retirement, Jack enjoyed donating a lot of his time to the local VFW, and even served on the board for a time.

He also enjoyed working at the Attic and drinking coffee at Subway. Following his coffee time he could usually be found making his rounds at Reynold’s Warehouse to talk and visit with the folks there. He also liked going to the weekend garage sales and antique picking.

He always had a love for antique tractors. Jack was also a very talented woodworker. Throughout the years he had gifted many beautiful creations to his kids, grandkids, and friends.

Above everything though, was Jack’s family. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren more than anything and was very proud of them. He could often be found supervising the many projects that the kids were working on.
