John “Jack” Patrick Butler, 86, passed away Saturday at home. He was born on July 26th, 1932 in Pittsfield to the late John and Kathleen (Hagerty) Butler. He grew up in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield and attended Our Lady of Hope Grammar School.

He later graduated from Cathedral High School in 1950 and after graduation, Jack worked at the Springfield Armory. He then went on to proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Jack worked as a Postal Clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 38 yrs.

retiring in 1987. He was predeceased by his sister Sally in 1932 and his brother Kevin in 2016. He was a longtime communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield.

He was a devoted and involved grandfather who enjoyed coaching and spending time with all of his grandchildren. He was very interested in religion, politics and sports. He was involved with the Pro-life movement and deeply respected the political leaders in our country who stood up for those same values.

Jack loved working outdoors and especially in his garden. He was a member of the Springfield American Legion Post 430. He was one of the first coaches known as a player’s coach.

His teams had fun. All of the kids wanted to be on his team. He always had an uplifting word for people, even complete strangers.

He was the beloved husband of 60 yrs. to Monica M. (Donnelly) Butler, he leaves his loving children and grandchildren; John, Patrick and his wife Melanie and their children; Patrick Jr. and his wife Melissa, Amanda and Zachary, his son Paul and his wife Mary and their children: Katherine, Brian and Christopher, his son Michael and his wife Michelle and their children; Justine, Mark, Isabella and her husband, Sgt. Justin Walz, Jacob, and Matthew, daughter Monica and her boyfriend John Peterson, and his daughter Mary and her husband Mark Fitzsimmons, and their children; Mark, Abbey, Daniel and Shannon, and he also leaves his caring siblings; Sr. Ann Butler, Kathleen Butler and Sr. Winifred Butler.

The calling hours are Thursday from 4-7 PM at TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Spfld. , and the Funeral Mass will be 11 AM Friday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church followed by a burial at St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Jack’s memory may be made to Pro-Life of Pioneer Valley, P.O. Box 60433, Longmeadow, MA 01116.
