Obituary for John R. Skidmore John R. Skidmore, 85, of Kingston, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at the Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. He was born in Cawood, Kentucky to John and Ethel (Pope) Skidmore, on May 27, 1933. John was preceded in death by his mother and father, older brother, Bill Fields of Lexington, Kentucky, and younger sister, Mildred Abbott, of Cawood.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Henry Skidmore, of Kingston, son Jay Skidmore (Denise), granddaughter Cadey Belcher and great grandson, Christian Griffin, and grandson Tim Griffin, all of Clarksville, Tennessee; daughter Julie Mincke (Henry), grandsons Jacob and Matthew Mincke of Hardin Valley, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. John was a member of First Baptist Church, Kingston, where he served as R.A. Leader, church clerk, and was a long-time deacon. He was a USAF veteran, from 1952-1956 serving in Okinawa during the Korean War.

He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Tennessee Tech, and taught in high schools in Cumberland County and Roane County. John enjoyed many successful years coaching TSSAA basketball and golf. After retiring from teaching, John worked for 7 years at Y12 in Oak Ridge.

He then enjoyed employment as a greeter at Oak Ridge Walmart for sixteen years. For several years, he was privileged to work as a Ranger at Lakeside Golf Course alongside supportive friends and fellow golfers. He was an avid fan of University of Kentucky Basketball his entire life.

John loved people, and always enjoyed drinking coffee and visiting with neighbors and community friends. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3pm Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the First Baptist Church. Memorial service will follow at 3pm.
