Obituary for Margarette “Iona” Caldwell Wyatt Margarette “Iona” Caldwell Wyatt 8/21/1926 – 11/23/2018 Margarette “Iona” Caldwell Wyatt went to her heavenly home November 23, 2018. Iona was born on August 21, 1926 to parents Rosa (Robinette) Caldwell (1902-1962) and Gilbert “Gib” Wesley Caldwell (1900-1995). Iona was twice blessed, also with a wonderful step-mother, Reece Eblen Day Caldwell (1906-1993), who enjoyed 26 years of marriage to Gib.
She was a lifetime resident of the Lawnville community in Kingston, TN. In 1947 Iona married Billy I. Wyatt (1927-1990) and together they had two daughters, Kimberley (Wyatt) Keck (husband, Jon) who reside in Knoxville, TN, and Kathy (Wyatt) Zachry (husband, Joel) who reside in Kingston, TN. Iona had one brother, Gilbert “Earl” (1925-2014) who married Lucy Smith of Knoxville.
Iona was a loving and positive person who was an example to many as a follower of Christ, both in word and in deed. She loved her faith, her family, her friends, her flowers, her fun, and especially her chocolate (…smile). Iona and Bill were charter members of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, TN, which they helped organize and build in 1954, and continued to support throughout their lives.
Both had very active roles within the church and its ministries. Iona’s life has been filled with compassion and service to others as standard fare, including crafting her career and work around the lives of her children and family. She interrupted her accounting work at K-25 to have children, then worked within the school system as Cherokee’s secretary to have a school schedule.
Later she returned to her work at K-25 and retired from there. Not only did she care for her husband, Bill, before his death, but also her parents. She has always put others first, self last.
Iona was an incredibly generous person who supported many causes of those less fortunate. Her giving spirit was part of her daily life. She was a joyful person, no matter her circumstance, and was always positive.
Nicknamed “Inca” by a college friend of Kathy’s, she has been known to her family and close friends affectionately by that name for decades. Her sense of humor and quick wit were hallmarks of her sweet personality until her last day. She was full of grace, which endeared her to those who knew her.
“Inca” has been loved by many and will be sorely missed. Her beautiful smile and countenance will give grateful memories to all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wyatt Endowment, First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 127 Lafayette Drive, P.O. Box 4836, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.
