Obituary of John Dougherty John “Geg” Dougherty April 16, 1948-March 1, 2018 Highland Falls, NY John “Geg” Dougherty, of Highland Falls NY, passed away on Thursday, March 1, surrounded by his family. He was 69 years old. Born on April 16, 1948, he was the son of the late Charles V. Dougherty and the late Elizabeth Hoag Dougherty.

Geg was the younger brother of Charles “Chuck” Dougherty, with whom he grew up riding motorcycles and overhauling cars at their home on Hillside Avenue. With Chuck, he worked as a heavy equipment operator and member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825. John was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team from 1967 to 1968.

He fought in the Battle of Dak To, resisting and defeating a four-day assault on Hill 875, for which his Brigade was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. Among several other commendations, John was also the recipient of a Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone. He is survived by his loving wife Marie Dougherty of Highland Falls and his adoring children: Molly Dougherty-Royce and husband Nate Royce of Ormond Beach, FL; Maggie Cotto and husband Jemal Cotto of Port Orange, FL; and Nicole Dougherty of Highland Falls, NY.

He is also survived by his beloved brother Chuck Dougherty and wife Suellen of North Port, FL; his nephews: Charles Dougherty Jr. and family of Middletown, NY, and Todd Dougherty and family of Wakefield, RI. He leaves behind his 2012 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe, called “Precious;” and several canine and feline children and grandchildren. Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY.

Memorial Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 12th at William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main Street, Highland Falls, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
