Obituary for Joseph Daniel “J.D.” Lewis Joseph Daniel “J.D.” Lewis, 90, of Swannanoa, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, December 13, 2018 at the VA Hospice Center. He was a 4-year veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II, along with all five of his brothers. After the Navy he joined the United States Army and served six years.
Joe retired from the National Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW4) after 27 years of service. He was an active member of the Swannanoa Free Will Baptist Church. Joe loved his family and his church family and will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Magda Lewis; parents, Ernest and Dozie Jones Lewis; brothers, Roy, Earl, Bill, Johnny and Troy Lewis; and sisters, Susie Ledford and Clara Hess. Survivors include his sons, Ronnie Lewis and Ricky Lewis, both of Swannanoa; grandchildren, Dr. Chris Lewis and wife, Anna Beth of Black Mountain and Haley Lewis of Swannanoa; former daughter-in-law, Kim Reynolds of Candler; sister, Rebecca Watkins of Cleveland, TN; sister-in-law, Valerie Lewis of Swannanoa; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Swannanoa Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Jack Ward and Pastor Bobby Shehan officiating.
Interment will follow in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors. His family will receive friends on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the church prior to the service. We invite you to send a message of condolence and view the Lewis family guestbook at www.
