Joseph H. Van Hecke, 92, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday April 29, 2018 at UPH Trinity, Rock Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30am Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be from 8:30am to service time at church.

Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be left for a fund to be established for his great grandchildren’s education. Joe was born on June 10, 1925 in Moline, the son of Paul and Justina (Hershop) Van Hecke.

He married Martha Veeder on June 9, 1947 at St. Mary’s Rectory, Moline. Joe had been employed by the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for over 33 years, retiring in 1982. He was a United States Navy Veteran, serving as a torpedoman in the Submarine Corp and later as a corpsman with a Marine division.

Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. He enjoyed golfing, carpentry work and watching the Chicago Cubs. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 70 years Martha; daughter, Cyndy Anderson, Rock Island; grandson, Scott (Andrea) Anderson, Rock Island; great grandchildren, Lillian, Sadie and Wyatt.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Madeline Van DenHende, Germaine Tanghe and Irene De Wilde.
