Joseph P. Steckbauer, age 54, of Appleton, passed away peacefully under the loving and watchful eyes of his family on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Joe was born in Appleton on March 25, 1964 to the late Paul S. and Mary (Mislinski) Steckbauer. He graduated with the class of 82 at Appleton East High School.

On January 11, 1986, Joe was united in marriage to the love of his life, Beth Lake. The couple celebrated 33 years together this year and were blessed with three children and four grandchildren: Meghan (Eric) and their son Caleb Joe; Jeffrey (Stacey) and their children Talan, Leif, and Reid; and Jason – whom was Joe’s caregiver for the past 2 years. Joe started working as a mechanic at Zentner’s Auto Service while in high school through the co-op program.

He then worked at Pierce Manufacturing for 22 years where he started out building firetrucks and worked his way up to supervisor, with aerial ladder trucks being his specialty. Joe was an avid outdoorsman – he loved the Packers, Pierce fire trucks, hunting, fishing, camping, and jeeping. He enjoyed his time as a Boy Scout Leader and loved spending time with his family and extended family.

Joe will be missed by his wife and best friend, Beth; his 3 children; 4 grandchildren; his mother, Mary Steckbauer; 3 brothers: Paul, Tom, and Steve; his father and mother-in-law, Raymond and Joyce Lake; 3 brothers-in-law: Brian (Candy) Lake, Andy (Laura) Lake, and Bob (Melissa) Lake; and 2 sisters-in-law: Kate (Josh) McConnell and Laurie (Mike) Frisch. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Paul Steckbauer, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A funeral service will take place at 4 pm on Sunday, February 17, at the Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel with Deacon Maury Reed officiating. Friends may visit at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 1 pm to 3:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Fox Valley Brain Tumor Coalition at the Neurospine Center of Wisconsin, 5320 W. Michaels Dr., Appleton, WI 54913.
