Joshua S. Schaefer, 17, of Evansville, passed away Monday, February 11, 2019, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital. Born February 20, 2001 to Bradley and Leslie (Couts) Schaefer. Joshua was a Junior at New Tech Institute where he competed at Nationals in 2017 and 2018 as a member of the Thunderbolt Archery Team.

He was part of the SICTC program studying precision metals and worked at Rural King West. He was an altar server for Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, participated in the Holy Redeemer youth group (HRYG) which included three mission trips to Pennsylvania and one summer volunteering for Mission Week, assisting the Junior High Youth Group. Joshua dominated the virtue of Charity by becoming the servant.

He accompanied his grandparents on three mission trips to Honduras, participated twice in “Mission Evansville” through the Diocese of Evansville helping to name his group the “Fire Breathing Rubber Ducky’s”. Joshua volunteered two summers at North Park Baptist Church’s Food Pantry, feeding the poor alongside his brothers, friends and Grandmother. He was awarded the 2019 Maria Goretti Distinction Award by the Diocese of Evansville.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and improving his shooting skills in preparation for fall deer season which included three deer camps and many weekends in the woods with family and friends. His legacy was to “serve as often as you can without asking for anything in return”. He understood that we become better people when we stop thinking of ourselves and would encourage others to carry on that legacy.

“So Moses set out with Joshua, his assistant, and went up to the mountain of God”. Exodus 24:13 Joshua is survived by his parents, Bradley and Leslie (Couts) Schaefer; brothers, Aaron and Andrew Schaefer; sisters, Felicity and Gabriela Schaefer; grandparents, Michael and Trina Schaefer, and Anita Couts; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Joshua was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jack Couts in 2014.

Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday, February 17, 2019, at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 N. First Ave. , Evansville, IN 47710. A memorial service will begin at 7:00 pm.

Visitation will continue from 11:00 am-12:00 Noon, Monday, February 18, 2019 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 918 W. Mill Rd. , Evansville, IN 47710, a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 12:00 noon with Fr. Jason Gries officiating.

Burial will be at St. Johns Cemetery Daylight. Memorial contributions can be made to Dream Big Honduras, in care of Joshua for the benefit of his brother Aaron’s continued service to the poor. Condolences may be made online at www.
