1965 – 2018 Julie Lynnette Bingham was born June 30, 1965, at Lucas County Hospital in Chariton to parents, Clinton and Ursula (Roberts) Bingham. Julie was an only child, but when she was about 3-years-old, her mom went back to work and Aunt Betty Hixson was her “baby-sitter. Her cousins, Sylvia, Sonja, Tony and Brent, were almost like siblings to her.
At the age of five she learned to water-ski with special little skis and enjoyed camping and skiing with her family at Rathbun Lake. She often said those were the happiest years of her life. She started taking piano lessons at a young age.
Gary Wisdom was her first piano teacher. Whenever he gave her a new song to play, she would ask him to play it for her. That worked for a while and she could just play what she had heard.
Gary then had her to sight read the songs. She became an accomplished pianist, being competitive with Robbie Sauser, playing the “Entertainer”. She was a good singer too.
She attended Van Allen School from kindergarten through sixth grade; Knoxville Baptist School, seventh through tenth grade; and Chariton High School her junior and senior years, graduating with the Class of 1983. She attended Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa and obtained her C.N.A. degree. Julie was employed as a bank teller at National Bank & Trust Company, First State Bank in Chariton and Bankers Trust Company in Des Moines.
Her care giving employment over the years was at Chariton Nursing & Rehab, Rural Health Care Advantage, HCI of Iowa and Circle of Life. She also worked at Casey’s, Hardee’s and the Chariton Dairy Queen for George and Karen Holder. She cleaned houses for a few families and worked at Hy-Vee’s HBC warehouse.
She attended Grace Baptist Church as a child, where she put her faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized. When she attended the Baptist school in Knoxville, she sang with the KRBS Choralaires; she competed in many music competitions and concerts. She was also a cheerleader and played on the volleyball and basketball teams.
She was married to David Poli in 1983 and they had three children: Garrett Levi, Jennifer Nichole, and Ryan Allen. They later divorced and a few years later she was married to Michael Garton for several years. Although she was physically unable to attend her children’s many sports activities, she was interested in them and proud of their achievements.
She also was very proud of Garrett and Ryan’s musical abilities especially on the guitars. Her heart was broken on July 29, 2010, when her daughter, Jennifer, died as result of injuries received in an auto accident. She loved her grandsons and they touched her heart.
Julie leaves to morn, her parents Clinton and Ursula; sons Garrett Levi (Carly Carter)and grandson Kale Levi Poli; and Ryan Allen (Crystal Elkins and son Bentley Yeo); many cousins, other relatives and friends. She is survived by her parents, Clinton and Ursula Bingham; son, Garrett (Carley Carter) Poli and their son, Kale Levi Poli; son, Ryan (Crystal Elkins) Poli and their son, Bentley Yeo; and many cousins, relatives, and friends.
