Karen Marie Vance, 65, of Indian River, passed away on June 12, 2018 at her home. Karen was born in Saginaw, MI on March 6, 1953, the daughter of Wilbur Weiss and Margaret (Knoll) Weiss. She grew up in Frankentrost, MI and attended Buena Vista High School.

She received a teaching degree from Concordia College (Nebraska) and a Master’s in Library Science from Wayne State University; she applied her skills at libraries, churches, and schools in the Bridgeport, MI and Indian River, MI areas. On February 5, 1977, she married Jim Vance in Frankentrost. The couple made their home in Bridgeport before moving to Indian River in 2010.

Karen devoted much of her life to service, faith, and fellowship. A curious and creative person, she delighted in discovery through reading and travel, and she enjoyed sharing her experience through music, painting, photographs, and crafts. She felt deeply connected to all God’s creation, from trilliums to pileated woodpeckers to “Oreo cookie” cows.

She treasured her family and cherished time with them. Karen is survived by her husband Jim Vance; children Sara Vance, Amy Vance (Nick Diehl), Mike (Katie) Vance, and Joe (Lucy Kellett) Vance; grandchildren Gabe Vance, Shaye Vance, Jack Vance, Parker Vance, Evan Vance, and Phoebe Kellett-Vance; mother Margaret Weiss; brother Bob Weiss; sister Ruth Simmons; and many dear friends. Services for Karen will take place on Sunday, June 17 at the Topinabee Community Church.

Visitation will be held from 3-4pm, service at 4pm. Anyone wishing to make a charitable contribution in memory of Karen should consider the Topinabee Community Church or the Cheboygan County Humane Society. Friends and family are welcome to share memorials and offer condolences online at www.
