Michael McDonald, 73 of Harbor Springs, died June 11, 2018 at home in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Mike was born August 22, 1944 in Lansing, Mich. , the son of Arthur and Ruth McDonald.

He grew up in Lansing and graduated from ton High School in 1962. He attended Lansing Community College and Michigan State University. On August 18, 1973, he married Janice Leigh Spanburg in Lansing, Mich.

Mike and Jan moved to Harbor Springs in 1974 after receiving a call from a local Harbor Springs architect that a new development was being started (Birchwood) and they needed a kitchen/bath expert. Upon arriving Mike and Jan knew right away that Harbor Springs was a magical place, and decided to make it their home. Mike worked for Hiser Kitchens (Northern Mich.

and UP territory) for a number of years before owning and operating his own kitchen/bath business in Harbor Springs/Petoskey—“Mike’s Kitchen Shop”. When Mike sold his kitchen business, he began working on computers and opened his own business—“The Macs”, helping clients with software and computer problems until his retirement in 2004. Mike loved being at home, working outside on his tractor “Big Orange” and riding his bicycle around his “Tunnel of Trees” neighborhood.

He was an avid sailor and enjoyed crewing and racing on his friends’ boats. Reading was his passion, and he also took pleasure in designing and building butcher block tables and countertops for friends and family. Survivors include: his beloved wife of 45 years, Jan; sister, Gloria McDonald Hansen (Siesta Key, Florida); nephew, Bill Capron (Lansing); niece, Kim Johnson (Siesta Key); nephew, Troy McDonald (Lansing); daughter, Lisa McDonald (Lansing); brother-in-law, Kurt Spanburg (Mary) (Harbor Springs); niece, Sara Leigh Spanburg (Petoskey) and his cats Mugsy and Spot.

Mike was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Forrest McDonald; nephew, Curt McDonald; and brother-in-law, Mark Spanburg. A private family memorial service has been held.
