Katherine’s Obituary Katherine Marie Stanton was born June 13, 1933, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Carl Elmer and Amy Alida (Tubbs) Larson, and passed away Sunday, January 6, 2019, at Integris Baptist Medical Center, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 85 years. Katherine grew up in Omaha and graduated from Omaha North High School in 1951. She graduated from St. Paul Bible Institute in 1954.
In 1955, Katherine married Norman Dean Stanton in St. Paul, Minnesota, where daughter Tamera was born. As a minister’s wife, Katherine (or “Kay” as many of her friends came to know her) lived with Norman in St. Paul, then moved to Benton, Wisconsin, where son Terrance (“Terry”) was born. From there they moved to New Jersey; then to New Rochelle, NY (when daughter Alice was born, in Bronxville, NY), then to Pennsylvania; and then to New York City (Manhattan), where she lived and worked for many years before moving to West Haven, Connecticut.
In both New York City and Connecticut, Katherine worked in ophthalmology offices. After retiring, she moved to Oklahoma in 2013 to be close to family, first in the city of Norman and then in Weatherford, OK. Throughout her adult years, Katherine was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church.
In her spare time, she loved following sports, especially baseball, and her favorite team was the New York Mets. She was an excellent piano player and loved opera. She always dreamed of traveling abroad, and her midlife trips to Europe, in the company of close friends, were among the highlights of her life.
She was an avid radio listener, and her favorite program was NPR (National Public Radio). Katherine loved to stay busy, and she especially enjoyed keeping house. She had a fine sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories about her childhood.
She was unfailingly cheerful and generous, and everyone who knew her knew that she gave to others before herself. Katherine is survived by one son, Terrance Stanton and wife Mary of Oak Park, Illinois; two daughters, Tamera Luzzatto and husband David Leiter, of Washington, DC; and Alice Stanton and husband Joseph Mashburn of Weatherford, Oklahoma; one brother, Gerald Larson and wife Ronda of Nebraska; and three grandchildren, Jake, Alec, and Laura. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Bernice Stauf.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions in her name may be sent to the radio station KGOU (Oklahoma’s NPR station), either online at KGOU.org or by sending a check to KGOU/OU Foundation, 860 Van Vleet Oval, Norman, OK, 73019. A memorial service celebrating Katherine’s life will be held in New York City at a later date, with details to be announced.
