Martinek, 82, Rosholt, died Sunday, April 8, 2018, at the Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 11, at 1:00 p.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt with Rev. Nancy Quatier officiating.

Music will be provided by organist Lana Sand. Burial will be in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, New Effington. Military honors will be provided by the Read Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington.

Pallbearers will be Justin Rikimoto, Chad Rikimoto, Dave van Gorkom, Casey Martinek, Rick Martinek, and Mike Martinek. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt and will continue Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Larry Wayne Martinek was born August 2, 1935, to Emil and Jeanette (Stowe) Martinek in rural New Effington, SD.

He attended grade school at the Old Effington rural school and graduated from New Effington High School in 1953. After graduation, he worked for local farmers and then as a surveyor for Northeast Telephone Company out of Fargo, ND. Together with his uncle, Curtis Stowe, Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 26, 1957.

After his overseas shot records were lost, he became a chaplain’s assistant. Larry was honorably discharged March 28, 1959. After the Army, Larry went to work as a surveyor in Walker, MN, where he met Jean Hamm, who was a waitress at the local cafe.

Larry and Jean were married November 5, 1959, in Minneapolis, MN. To this union two children were born, Randy and Deb. They moved to Rosholt in 1963.

Larry started work at Ireland’s Lumberyard where he worked his way from employee to manager. In 1985 he purchased the yard, changing the name to Martinek Lumber. Larry retired and sold the lumberyard in 2003.

Jean passed away September 27, 2010. Larry’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, trapping, and gardening. He also enjoyed watching Westerns and the Minnesota Twins.

Larry loved to spend time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. Survivors include his son, Randy (Dawn Lerew) Martinek of Rosholt; daughter, Deb (Dave) van Gorkom of Kulm, ND; five grandchildren, Justin (Niki) Rikimoto, Chad (Jessie Spence) Rikimoto, Crystal Rikimoto, Jennifer (John) Goehring, and Casey (Marissa Bauer) Martinek; 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janis Swenson of Goodwin, SD, Karen (Kervin) Steen of Sisseton, and Sandra Martinek of Sisseton; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Martinek of New Effington. Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents; a brother, Vernell; a granddaughter-in-law, Mandi Rikimoto; and two great-grandsons, Blaine and Trentin Rikimoto.
