Leland Charles “Skip” Wilkie, age 70, of Waterford, died Wednesday January 23, 2019 at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. He was born in ¬¬¬Fall River MA, on April 5, 1948, the son of Lt Cmdr. Leland Oscar and Alice (Silvia) Wilkie.

He is survived by his sister Lee Ann Grills of New London; his brother Glen A. Wilkie and his wife, Sharon, of Uncasville. He was predeceased by his sister Charlene McLain and her husband Sidney of Lansing, MI. ; Brother-in-law Donald Grills of New London, CT.

and Nephew Brian Grills He was affectionately called “Uncle Skip” by his surviving 2 nieces, 7 nephews, along with 22 great and 12 great-great nieces & nephews. Leland Served his country during the Vietnam War as a Corporal in The United States Marine Corps. He was a retired Police Officer with the Naval Submarine Base Groton-New London.

Skip enjoyed hunting and gardening but had a passion for fishing. At his happiest you would find him on his boat patiently or impatiently waiting to hook the big one. If there is fishing in heaven, that’s where he will be.

He will surely be missed by his family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, in St. Joseph Church, followed by interment in St. Mary Cemetery.

There will be visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday morning at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave. , New London. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
