Obituary for Leo Smith On Thursday, October 11, 2018, Leo Smith, a wonderful father, teacher and advisor, went home to be with Jesus at the age of 84. Leo was born on August 8, 1934 in Aynor, SC to Colie and Ruth (Cook) Smith. Early in his professional career he was an apprentice and electrician at the DuPont Savannah River plant near Aiken, South Carolina.

He later transferred to the Old Hickory DuPont plant in Old Hickory, Tennessee, where he became an Electrical Engineer until retiring in 1992. On March 25, 1954 he married Shirley Moseley. They had two daughters, Joy, Donna (Brian) Anderson and two sons Larry (Lori) and Bobby.

A Freemason, he and his wife Shirley raised their family in Madison, Tennessee. Leo had an uncanny ability to design, repair and maintain all things mechanical and electrical. Many of his colleagues, friends and family were known to say “we never saw anything he couldn’t fix”.

After retiring from DuPont, he spent the next 23 years as an electrical contractor and consultant for many companies around the midstate area. Leo had a gift for helping others. He leveraged his technical aptitude by teaching electronics to apprentice electricians evenings at Humme Fogg HS for over 26 years.

He never lived an extravagant lifestyle so he could always lend a hand to those in financial need. His passion was his country, his family, his work, story telling and riding horses. He was a great connoisseur of home cooked meals by his lovely wife Shirley.

He could often be found in later years at Hardee’s, Cracker Barrel and anywhere Krispy Kreme Donuts were served. A conservative American he admired John Wayne, Ron Reagan and Donald J. Trump. Leo was preceded in death by his daughter Joy; wife, Shirley; Father Colie; mother Ruth; brothers, Jimmy, Bill, Bryant and Lloyd; sisters Ernestine, Betty and Doris.

Leo is survived by sisters, Christine, Ruby, Janice; Brother George; Daughter Donna; Sons Larry and Bobby; Grandchildren Eric, Kyle and Katie; Great Grandchildren Riley and Presley, and many nieces and nephews.
