Obituary for Lester Hartley INDIANAPOLIS – Lester C. Hartley, age 96, of Indianapolis, formerly of Greenfield, passed away Friday, December 28, 2018 at his home. He was born in Beech Grove on March 22, 1922 to Charles Hartley and Martha E. (Belt) Hartley. He graduated from Westland High School in 1940 and attended Diesel Engine School in the Navy.

He enlisted in the Navy in the fall of 1940 and found himself in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 at the age of 19 years. He served until 1946, then went on to serve in the active naval reserve for 21 years. He married Lucille (Lutes) Hartley on March 2, 1946 in Oakland, CA.

He worked for Allison Transmission for 34 years before retiring in 1980. Mr. Hartley was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and served as secretary and president for many years. He was also a member of the Philadelphia United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lucille; daughter, Carolyn Hartley Awishes of Cumberland; grandchildren, Natalie (Keith) Hartman of Indianapolis and Tony (Shelby) Awishes of Noblesville; and 6 great-grandchildren, Alexis, Jacob, Jacqueline, Connor, Caden, and Cameron. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Richard, Everett, Russell and Charles Hartley; and sisters Thelma Watson and Jocelyn Hartley. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy.

40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation at 12:00 p.m. Reverend John Eley will be officiating. Entombment will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Philadelphia United Methodist Church, 2265 W US Hwy 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. Envelopes will be available at the mortuary. Friends may share a memory or a condolence at www.
