Lilburn Everett Ward, III November 28, 1938 – March 1, 2019 Lilburn Everett Ward III, 80, of Roanoke, Va. passed away peacefully on March 1, 2019. Wardie was born November 28, 1938 in New Brunswick, NJ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lilburn Everett Ward Jr. and Jane St.Clair Ward. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kitty Lou Tinnell Ward; son, Everett St. Clair Ward and wife Maria; daughter, Stacey Ward Halpert and husband Harry; daughter, Kimberly Ann Ward and husband Nestor Sanchez; and grandchildren Jack Halpert, Jane Ward, Jon Marco Sanchez, Charlie Halpert, Everett Ward Jr., Eli Sanchez and Wallace Halpert. Wardie attended both The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech, but his heart was always in Charlottesville at the St. Elmo House.

He served two years in the army before graduating college and then worked for National Cash Register in both Richmond and Roanoke. He later founded Roanoke Recycling and eventually sold it to Chesapeake Corporation where he continued his career. After retiring, he worked with Commonwealth Builders and then enjoyed working with his son Rett at Tinnell’s Finer Foods.

Wardie was very innovative, full of mischief and always ready for a party where he could spend hours telling his adventurous stories. He admired and loved his children and his seven grandchildren and was grateful for all of the lifelong friendships that he made here in Roanoke and at UVA. A special thanks to Chris Williams and Keith Thompson along with the Palliative Care Unit at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019 at Second Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, VA. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wardie’s memory to the Virginia Athletic Foundation, in memory of L.E. Ward III, PO Box 400833, Charlottesville, VA 22904 or Second Presbyterian Church Property, Maintenance, and Repair Fund, 214 Mountain Ave.
