Lois’ Obituary Lois B. Matthews, age 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 23, 2019 in Portland. She was born March 12, 1929 in Portland, ME to Woodbury and Edwina (Appleby) Baston. Most recently a resident under the caring staff at Falmouth by the Sea, she was a long time resident of South Portland, Maine.
Growing up and attending school on Long Island, Maine, she was graduated from Portland High School as a member of the class of 1947. After successfully raising her five children into their teens, she returned to work as a part-time hotel housekeeper, eventually becoming the long-time manager of the Lafayette Townhouse in Portland. Outside of work she had many varied interests including working in the South Portland voting stations for many elections, attending her children’s many sports and school events, and role model as a Girl Scout leader.
Using a quick wit and great sense of humor, she always instilled in others a strong work ethic and a great sense of compassion. As a lifelong member of Thornton Heights United Methodist Church, she spent many years singing with the choir. An avid sports fan, she enjoyed watching tennis, baseball and especially the Boston Celtics.
A Lyric Music Theater grand dame, she was given a Lifetime Achievement award by the organization. Her many years with Lyric included being a board member, photo archivist, treasurer, the “lady in the box office with the flower in her hair” and cast member in several shows including Brigadoon and George M. She is survived by her five loving children, Linda Brown, David (Karen) Matthews, Diane (Ruth Domingo) Matthews, Sharon (Richard) Brobst, and Keith (Amy) Matthews; nine grandchildren, Jessica (Alan) Gray, Jeffrey Brown, Jonathan Brown, Karinne (Dan Vanderclock) Brobst, Stacia (Dino) Kozidis, Kyle (Heather Carlson) Matthews, Nicholas (Alyssa) Matthews, Carolyn (Ben) Daut, and Josh Matthews; six great grandchildren, Tiffany, Alexis, Ethan, Steven, Theo, and Oliver; nephews Mark and Steven Gillis and niece Lori (Gillis)Harriman. She is predeceased by her parents, former husband, Bruce H. Matthews, and sister Jean Gillis.
Her children wish to express their gratitude and give many thanks to the staff and residents at Falmouth by the Sea for the love, friendship and care they gave Mom over the last three years, and to the Maine Medical Center ER staff for their compassion to us and her on her last day with us. Final arrangements are being made by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd, South Portland, ME with visiting hours there 4PM to 7PM on Friday, February 1st and services 3:30PM Saturday, February 2nd at Thornton Heights UMC, 100 Westbrook St, South Portland, ME.
