Sparrow Dickerson May 06, 1927 – January 17, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Lola Sparrow Dickerson departed this life on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at DePaul Hospital after a brief illness. Lola was born in Princess Anne County (Virginia Beach), VA on May 6, 1927 to the late Robert T. and Fannie W. Sparrow. The Christian leadership of her parents led her to biblical teachings and union with the African Methodist Episcopal Church where she remained in fellowship throughout her life (St. Matthews—Princess Anne County and St. John’s—Norfolk) Lola received her formal education in the public schools of Princess Anne County (now Virginia Beach), Virginia where she graduated from Princess Anne County Training School.
Upon graduation, she worked in a series of industries which concluded with her retirement from Tidewater Legal Aid in 1989. Lola supplemented her income for over 50 years as a highly successful Avon representative. Lola’s distinguished service to her customers was recognized by the CEO of Avon in 2017.
Also, she enjoyed years of bowling with her “bowling entourage” which enabled her to tell others what they needed to do to improve their skill. From a previous marriage, Lola gave birth to her only child Theodore Owens. Later, Lola married Walter Dickerson and the two enjoyed a charismatic and enriching life together for 55 years until her death.
Lola and Walter loved to entertain family and friends for holidays and other special occasions. Lola had been a dedicated and faithful member of St. John’s A.M.E. Church for over 60 years where she had been an active member of Usher Board I, Shut-In Club (past-president), St. John’s Church Mother, Lay Organization, Stewardess Board IV (past-president), Women’s Missionary Society, Douglas-Studivant-Woodhouse (Sunday School Class) until sickness limited her mobility. Also, in addition to her tithes, she would earmark her treasury to address specific unmet needs of the church.
Lola proudly fulfilled her civic duty by serving as a precinct worker during elections. Whenever the polls were open, she diligently performed her duties. She relished working with Walter and her neighbors as a member of the Coronado Civic League.
The hard work of the Civic League culminated in a new recreation center for area residents. Lola leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved husband Walter; son Theodore (Judy) Owens; and a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; devoted nieces and nephews, cousin and friends. A celebration of life will be Thursday, January 24, 2019, 11a.m. at St. John A.M.E. Church, 545 E. Bute St., Norfolk, VA 23510.
The Interment will follow a Woodlawn Memorial Garden, Norfolk, VA. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm on Wednesday in the Chapel of Community Funeral Home. The family is very grateful to those who loved Lola by extending themselves to support and assist her with various acts of kindness.
