Braintree- Louise “Lucy” V. Mackiewicz of Braintree, formerly of Squantum, passed away on July 12, surrounded by her loving family, after a lengthy illness. Lucy was born in Boston to Alfons and Veronica Rozanski on July 31, 1930. She grew up in Dorchester and was a graduate of the Jeremiah Burke School for Girls.
Lucy is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years Carl J. Mackiewicz who loved her dearly. She is also survived by her children Thomas G. Mackiewicz and his wife Susan of Ogunquit ME, John A. Mackiewicz and his wife Joyce of Pelham NH, Christine M. Cunningham and her husband David of Braintree, and James F. Mackiewicz of Milton NH. She was the loving “Babci” to her grandchildren Kayla Mackiewicz, Audrey Rogers, Kurt Rogers, Jason Mackiewicz, Michael Gilbert, Rachael Gilbert, and Kevin Cunningham.
Lucy was predeceased by her sister Helen Laskowski and her husband Dominic. She is also survived by her niece Regina Laskowski, and nephews Andrew Laskowski, and Richard Laskowski. Lucy worked many years at the Boilermakers Local 29.
She was an avid gardener who not only kept her own property full of color and life, but would show up at her children’s homes with trowel in hand, ready to dig. She also was an excellent baker and interfered with everyone’s diet by bringing cakes and pastries to their home despite it not being a birthday or holiday. Her arrival alone made it a celebration.
After her husband, children, and grandchildren, Lucy’s biggest love was travel. She belonged to the Krakowiak Polish Dance group which is where she met Carl. She then joined the Krakowiak Singers, who toured all across Poland, Switzerland, and Italy.
While in Rome, devoted Catholic Lucy had an audience with Pope John Paul II. Along with Carl, she cruised the rivers of Eastern Europe, Alaska, and the Mississippi, as well as the Panama Canal. Together they traveled the world and did their best to see all there was to see.
Lucy will best be remembered for her feisty personality and sharp wit. She had a great infectious laugh. Most people who knew her well marveled at her toughness: Lucy battled so many health issues yet maintained her optimistic and cheery personality throughout.
She was a strong and unique person, the likes of which had she never been born, we would have to invent her because there was never another quite like her. A wake will be held at Peck Funeral Home at 516 Washington St. in Braintree on July 17th from 5 to 8 PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish at 655 Dorchester Ave.
