Obituary for Major John Reno Cassarini Sr, USAF (Ret) Print Dateline Columbus Major John Reno Cassarini Sr, USAF (Ret) passed away peacefully Thursday February 14th, 2019 with his loving family by his side. Born in Homestead, PA. , as a boy he lived in Italy before moving back to Homestead a suburb of Pittsburgh.
After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1952, John enlisted in The United States Air Force where he began his 20 year career as a Navigator and Command Pilot, serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. John flew fixed wing aircraft for 16 years. C-47 Gooney Bird, B-25 medium bombers, A26 Attack Bomber, B29 Super fortress KB-43 Aerial Tanker, C-130 Troop Carrier and HH-43 Rescue Helicopter.
He was Commander of 3 Helicopter Rescue Detachments in Vietnam and Thailand. During his time in Vienna and Thailand, he received the “MAC Outstanding Commanders Trophy” He also flew Neil Armstrong during his visit to Guam. Upon his retirement, John became a teacher for the Burlington Township High School.
He was a proud parishioner of St. Mary’s church, a life member of the Bordentown Elks, a member of the American Legion Post 25, Military Officers Association of America, Air Force Association, NEA and a past member of the Yapewi Aquatic Club of Bordentown. But his greatest joy in life was his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He will be missed by many. Son of the late Peter and Maria Cassarini, he is survived by his beloved wife, Mafalda “Mitzie” Cassarini, his loving children, John Reno Jr. and Margaret “Midge” Cassarini, Lisa (Cassarini) and Cliff Newcomer, his five grandchildren Stephen Newcomer, John “Jack” Peter Cassarini, Collin Cassarini, Carly Newcomer & Devon Newcomer. The family would like to give special thanks to Keesha Bounds his home healthcare nurse, who provided compassionate care during the last two years of his life at home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to (SVdP) St. Vincent DePaul Society, 45 Crosswicks St, Bordentown, NJ 08505 to the attention of Mary Karch, SVdP Treasurer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Friday, 2/22/2019 11:00 am at Mary Mother of the Church Parish 45 Crosswicks St. Bordentown NJ 08505. Calling hours will be held Thursday, 6-8 p.m. & Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
