Marcia Harris Murphy, 80, of Scituate, MA, formerly of Cohasset, MA, passed away on July 15th following a brief illness. Marcia was the loving wife of the late Richard Vincent Murphy and the devoted mother of David H. Murphy and his wife Sarah A. of Cohasset, MA and Amy L. Murphy and her husband Michael T. Maltzan of Pasadena, CA. She is survived by five cherished grandchildren: Jack, Christopher, and Samuel Murphy, and Hannah and Gus Maltzan; her sister Linda H. Moser of Charleston, SC; brother Christopher H. Harris of South Royalton, VT; her sister-in-law Clarice M. Casassa and husband H. Alfred Casassa of Rye Beach, NH; sister-in-law Lillian Murphy of Portland, ME; sister-in-law Emily Murphy of Rochester, MN; as well as by several adored cousins, nieces and nephews and numerous dear friends.

Marcia was born on October 8, 1937 in Newton MA, daughter of the late Norman E. Harris and Phyllis H. Harris. After graduating from Winchester High School and earning an associate degree from Centenary College, Marcia transferred to Tufts University and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree from the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development. She later received further training in Massachusetts General Hospital’s Reading and Language Disabilities Unit, where she was certified as a teacher and a teaching training instructor in Therapy for Specific Learning Disability (SLD).

Marcia taught hundreds of children and adults how to read through her private practice and in various public and private schools, most recently at Derby Academy in Hingham, MA. She also trained many teachers through out the New England area, and was a Fellow in the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practioners and Educators from 1995-2014. Marcia was a long time member of the Cohasset Yacht Club, Cohasset Tennis and Squash Club, Cohasset Garden Club and Cohasset Community Center.

A Service will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 16 Highland Avenue, Cohasset, MA at 11 am on Thursday, July 19, 2018. Visiting hours omitted. Interment private at Newton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Marcia may be made to the Glastonbury Abbey or St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
