OBITUARY Margaret Kimbro November 6, 1917 – January 11, 2019 Margaret Evelyn Eleazer was born Nov. 6, 1917, to the late Mary Anna Rebecca Lindler Eleazer and Lawrence Keitt Eleazer. She grew up on her parents’ farm in the Dutch Fork area of Richland County, South Carolina.
Margaret shared childhood adventures with her brother, George Bennet Eleazer, sister, Mary Rebecca Eleazer, and younger sister, Edith Leora Eleazer. After high school graduation,she attended business school in near-by Columbia SC. WWII was looming, so her brother suggested she take the newly developed Civil Service Examination, which she passed with flying colors.
. Job opportunities continued to be scarce in the years following The Great Depression, so Margaret went to Washingon DC in 1937 in pursuit of a bright future. She found employment in the federal government and it was there that she met Benjamin N. Kimbro.
They married in 1939 and continued to work in Washington during the war years. Following the birth of their daughter, Meredith (Mary Edith), they moved to Arlington VA, where they lived for over 65 years. Mrs. Kimbro continued her employment with the federal government after her daughter began grade school.
She was a treasure house of glimpses into national government in its daily operations. These vignettes were shared in weekly letters she wrote to her “folks down-home” every Sunday afternoon for countless years. Margaret retired as Director of Personnel, US Selective Selective System after a lengthy career.
The Kimbro family were active participants in community life and devoted members of Dulin United Methodist Church. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Ben N Kimbro; her daughter, Meredith Kimbro; her brother, sisters and their spouses. Surviving to cherish her memory are nephews C. Bennett Shealy(Debbie), G. Paul Eleazer(Adele); nieces Joanne E Vanderbosch(Philip), Catherine E. Richardson(Ron), and Evelyn E Anderson(Dean).
Many grand-nieces and nephews will remember Aunt Margaret. The love of her daughter’s life, Thomas M Gernhofer, is also a devoted family member who has been unfailing in his care of her over the years. Mrs. Kimbro will be buried at a graveside service in the family plot at Shady Grove UMC, 1918 Shady Grove Rd, Irmo SC 29063 at 2 pm, Saturday,Jan.
19. A celebration of her life is planned for a later date. The family of Mrs. Kimbo wishes to thank the management and caregivers of Powhatan Nursing Home, Falls Church, VA, for the exceptional care given their aunt.
Powhatan’s loving attention greatly increased the quality of Mrs Kimbro’s life in her waning years. Memorials may be made to Shady Grove UMC, 1918 Shady Grove Rd, Irmo SC 29063 and Dulin UMC 513 E Broad St, Falls Church VA 22046.
