She was the daughter of the late John Albert Blackwell (Ruby) and the late Annie Cobb. She was a Caswell County native.

She was raised by the late James and Algia “Sweet” Bigelow in Washington D.C. She was married to the late Benjamin Smith. Nell loved poetry and was known as the poet of Caswell County.

She was a member of the Caswell County museum, an avid reader and volunteered at the Caswell County Senior Center. She loved acting and spending time with her family. She was very creative in the arts and was involved in fashion designing, painting and jewelry making.

She was also a member of the American Legion Auxillary #210. She volunteered with the local veterans and assisted them with doing plays, poems and whatever activity that was requested. In her spare time, Nell could be found at the many flea markets in the area.

She leaves to cherish her memory four brothers: Lonnie Blackwell (Dorothy) and Kevin Cobb both of Yanceyville, Michael Bigelow (Darcel) of Maryland and Alton Bigelow (Angela) of Washington D.C.; eight sisters: Jarnice Blackwell of Richmond, VA, Kim Blackwell of Reidsville, Tracy Spann of Raleigh, Veronica Wolff (Eddy) of Washington, D.C., Cecil Wright, Lottie Mims and Mary Wright all of Yanceyville, Betty Jones (Ricky) of Burlington, three aunts: Evelyn “Obie” Henderson of Greensboro, Wilma Blackwell of Reidsville, and Shirley Mclaughlin of Yanceyville, one uncle: Houston Bigelow of Yanceyville, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, family and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Kim Cobb and Jimmy Bigelow and three sisters: Sheila Lyle, Hazel Cobb and Mary Cobb. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 12Noon at Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held from 11am-12pm with the family arriving at 11:30am. Public viewing will be held from 1-8pm in the Roy Blackwell Chapel on Friday, January 25, 2019. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
