Margaret Whitsett Abrames, 79, died Saturday, April 14, 2018 in Hendersonville, NC. She was born on January 21, 1939 in Birmingham, AL and adopted when she was six months old. Known by those who loved her as “Princess Margaret,” she spent her youth in Sylacauga, AL and graduated from Sylacauga High School in 1956.

She attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL, graduating with a degree in Sociology in 1960. She had been living in South Florida since 1969. Along with Alabama and Miami Dolphins football games and “Murder TV” (as her daughters lovingly teased her about), her passion was social work and protecting those who couldn’t protect themselves.

She worked tirelessly to support the rights of women and children and recognized there were very few res available for assistance. As a result, along with a few like-minded women, she helped launch Women in Distress in 1974 and the Rape Crisis Center in 1977. Her friends and family remember her wicked sense of humor, quick wit, and ability to make anyone laugh no matter what the circumstance.

She was the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Daniel C. and Julia S. Whitsett. She is survived by daughters Marnie Abrames McCracken (Phil) of Johnson City, TN, Amy Abrames of Decatur, GA, Susan Abrames of Fort Lauderdale, FL; granddaughters Emily McCracken of Alpharetta, GA and Julia Kincaid of Decatur, GA; grandsons Noah and Alex Kincaid of Decatur, GA; brothers Dan Whitsett (Margaret Anne) of Huntsville, AL and Stan Whitsett (Fredese) of Kailua, HI; nieces; nephews; cousins; and way too many friends to count.

A memorial service will be held at Plantation United Methodist Church in Plantation, FL on Saturday, May 5, at 2:00 PM with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. The Rev. Dr. Heather “Hedy” Collver will officiate.

For those attending, memories will be encouraged and tiaras, casual clothing, and Alabama gear are welcome in the spirit of “Princess Margaret”. In lieu of flowers, it was Margaret’s wish that donations be made to Women in Distress, either by mail, P.O. Box 50187, Lighthouse Point, FL 33074 with “In Memory of Margaret Abrames” in the memo line or online at secure3. convio.net/widbc/site/Donation2?
