Maria Arredondo February 16, 1928 – January 23, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Maria Reyna Arredondo passed away peacefully at her home with her children at her bedside, on January 23, 2019. She was born on February 16, 1928, in Mission, TX and was one of 10 children to Octaviano and Josefa Reyna. Mrs. Arredondo was a fun-loving and adoring mother to Raul Arredondo, Jr., Sulema Rodriguez (JJ, Jr), David Arredondo and Elma Arredondo; and grandmother to four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Maria is survived by her sisters Elida Reyna Sanchez, Lucinda Reyna De Los Santos and brother, Robert Reyna. In 2014, she was preceded in death by her husband, US Army veteran, Raul M. Arredondo. Maria married Raul in 1948.
Together they purchased (and she would like for you to know with her savings! ) Sun-Ray Venetian Blinds and Flooring Company, a stalwart business in Weslaco for more than 50 years. She was a fixture at the store, running the books and ensuring everyone who entered met her beautiful shining face and heard her beautiful, classy, voice.
Sometimes, her nephew, Freddy Reyes, would call the office just to hear her answer the phone. Maria embraced life from childhood to her last days at home. She had the great fortune of growing up in a family with all its bonds in place.
Her father’s love, music and writing was forever instilled in her heart. The love she experienced for her mother and sisters became known ‘the glue” for it was always difficult to separate and leave each other’s side. As a devout Christian, she always kept scriptures written on pieces of paper throughout the house.
She was active with her church family at La Santisima Trinidad United Methodist church. During the 60’s, Mary was active with the American Cancer Society as an area captain and in the Weslaco Memorial VFW Auxiliary as a patriotic instructor. Her children grew up honored by her presence at school functions and proud of her classy and elegant presence.
Her garden, trees and shrubs, as with everything she touched, flourished under her care. She loved her home and proudly earned Yard of the Month. When not tending to her beautiful garden, Maria could be found in the kitchen.
Often times, the center of her home, Maria made sure no one went hungry. Notably, in 1996, she won the Carl’s ‘Top Tamale’ a valley-wide contest for the best tamales. It was also not unusual for there to be a fresh baked cake on the kitchen table.
Maria will forever be remembered for her warm kindness, grace, and loving heart and her presence will be missed by all who had the fortune of knowing her during her time with us. The family wishes to thank the team at Kindred Hospice for their angelic care and compassion. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2019 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco – Chapel of The Heavens.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco – Chapel of The Heavens. Officiating will be Rev. Carlos Zamora.
Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to her Methodist church, Iglesia La Santisima Trinidad, PO Box 782, Weslaco, TX 78599. Arrangements are under the direction of Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco, Inc., 2602 N. Texas Ave.
