Molly was born October 16, 1925, in Gulfport, Miss. to Elizabeth Dunklin and Edward T. O’Connell Sr

She was raised in Birmingham, Ala. , with her siblings, Betty, Ed, Carol and Richard, who all preceded her in death. The widow of John “Jack” Smith, Molly is survived by her five children, Mark (Nancy) Smith, Steven (Frances) Smith, Catherine Smith Nemetz Cunningham, Elizabeth Smith Thomas and Edward Smith.

She was a loving grandmother to eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews. She attended St. Paul’s Catholic School in Birmingham, Auburn University, and graduated in 1947 from R.P.I. (now VCU) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Always a lady, her patience, grace and beauty were distinctive.

Her gifts were many; she was an artist and superb seamstress. She excelled in all manner of things handmade including painting, writing, ceramics, gardening and flower arranging, to name a few. Devoted to her Lord, she embodied her religion in every facet of her life.

Molly attended St. Bridget and St. Benedict, and volunteered at St. Peter’s. Molly and her family were so blessed to have the Bon Secours Hospice team, who walked with her through her final journey. Please join us at a Funeral Mass, and Celebration of Life reception Wednesday, February 27, at 10 a.m. to be held at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 6006 Three Chopt Road.

The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Bon Secours Hospice. “Spread Your Wings, You Can Fly.
