Mary Cox Allen January 16, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Mary Cox Allen, 99, of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Heritage Inn. Born on October 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Downing Cox Sr. and Eunice Marshall Cox. She was also predeceased by her husband of 26 years, Stephen Allen, Sr

Mrs. Allen was in the first group of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in the U.S. Navy Reserves in WWII. She was very proud of her military service. She also had a long association with C.H. Williams department store, and worked for 16 years as a bookmender for the UVA Alderman Library before retiring.

After retiring, Mary participated in Senior Center and Smocking Guild activities. She enjoyed many other hobbies, including watercolors, growing orchids, knitting, photography, and playing cribbage and scrabble. Mrs. Allen is survived by her two children, Libby and Stephen Allen, Libby’s wife Deb, Stephen’s wife Lisa, her granddaughter Emily, a brother Mickey Cox, and many other family members.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 25, 2019 in the Hill and Wood Chapel with Pastor Ed Rigg officiating. Burial will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens. Her family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Special thanks to the kind staff at Heritage Inn, and to Legacy Hospice for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ivy Creek United Methodist Church, 684 Woodlands Rd. , Charlottesville, VA 22901.
