North Jackson – Mary (Alexander) Shaheen, 98, passed away on Thursday March 14, 2019 at the Antonine Village in North Jackson. Mary was born February 7, 1921 in Niles, Ohio, a daughter of Farris and Asma Alexander. She married Sid Maron Shaheen June 21, 1948, and together they had three children and lived in the Niles community most of her life.

She was a member of St. Stephen Church and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Women’s Auxiliary, a Girl Scout leader, and a volunteer at Shepherd of the Valley. She was a supporter of the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in North Jackson. She also worked with her husband in the Men’s and Boys’ Shop before his retirement.

She played Duplicate Bridge on a competitive basis, proudly earning the rank of Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League. Mary loved seeing new places and had the opportunity to travel to both Alaska and Hawaii, and celebrated her eightieth birthday with a Caribbean cruise. Mary was compassionate, caring, and always said it never hurts to be kind.

Family was her number one priority. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed being with people and loved to entertain.

If someone in the family or a friend was sick, she would cook their favorite meal and take it to them. Mary leaves behind her two daughters, Marian (Dr. Gerald) Eskay and Diana Shaheen, two beloved grandsons Douglas and Matthew Eskay, and numerous much-loved nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Sid who died April 22, 1987, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Joseph Maron Shaheen M.D. who died February 13, 2001; and her brothers, Joseph, Nicholas, and Elias Alexander.

Family and Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2019 at Holeton Yuhasz Funeral Home, 126 West Park Ave. , Niles, where the St. Stephen Bereavement Ministry will have a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:30 p.m. at St. Stephen Church 129 W. Park Ave.

, Niles preceded by a 12:00 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home. Rev. James Korda will be the celebrant.

Burial will be at St. Stephen Cemetery. The Shaheen family sincerely thanks Hospice of the Valley and the caring staff of the Antonine Village for the kindness and compassion shown to Mary during her stay there. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Antonine Village 2675 N. Lipkey Road, North Jackson, Ohio 44451.
