Obituary for Mary F. Lettau Lettau, Mary Frances. Age 86. August 31, 2018.

Formerly of Southfield, MI. Mary was born in Detroit on December 17, 1931 to the late Winona and Edgar “Butch” Brandau. Friends and family called her “sis”.

Like her father, a professional golfer and football player, she enjoyed sports – she was captain of her high school basketball team, a competitive ice skater, and a fan of Detroit Tiger baseball. She attended Marygrove College and got a degree in Sociology. For a short time after college, she was a counselor and director of CYO Camps in Michigan.

Even fifty years after camp, Mary still had monthly standing lunch dates with her fellow campers and counselors. Throughout her life, Mary was an active proponent of education. Early in her career she worked as an English teacher.

After leaving the workforce to raise her family, she remained active in education as a member of many school committees – and was a vocal proponent of homework. After her children had moved on, she returned to work and spent 20 years as the educational liaison at the St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher home in Southfield. She was an avid reader and writer.

She especially enjoyed reading history and historical fiction and taught several writing classes at the local library to help people document their family histories. She liked to drink tea, sit with her cat, read the paper, and do crossword puzzles. She enjoyed frequent lunches with friends and talking about her grandchildren.

She did not like to cook and was fortunate to have had a husband who loved it Most importantly, she was an amazing daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She will be missed dearly. Mary is the loving mother of Molly Holcomb, Michael Lettau, and Mary Crino.

Proud grandmother of Teddy Holcomb, Katie Crino, Leo Crino, Davina Lettau, Nina Murphy, and Sarah Murphy. Great-grandmother of Quinn Wilson. Sister of the late Edgar Brandau.

Visitation will be held Sunday, September 9, from 3 pm until 6 pm at the Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Rd (4 blocks E. of Woodward) Royal Oak. Father Chateau will offer a short service at 5 pm.
