Mary “Gret”‘s Obituary Mary Margaret (Mullen) Lozeau, age 74, passed away at her home in Hanson, surrounded by her family, on December 20, 2018. She was born August 25, 1944, at U.S. Naval Hospital, Brooklyn, New York, to George and Mary (McNellis) Mullen. Mary, otherwise known as Gret, moved with her family to Red Acres in Hanson, MA, in 1950.
She attended Sacred Heart Elementary and High School, Kingston, MA, where she was Senior Class Secretary. Gret earned a B.A. from the University of Rochester in 1966 and a Master of Education in 1968 from State College at Boston. On Christmas day, 1970, she married “her favorite husband”, Gerard Arthur Lozeau, at the time an Army Medical Service Corps Officer serving in Germany.
Together, they had two daughters and two sons. Gret was a dedicated life-long teacher on many levels and in a variety of settings. She loved each of her students without reservation and the written comments and thank you notes from students and parents indicated their admiration and gratitude.
Gret won many awards as a 4-H member and Plymouth County leader of 4-H, including the distinction of being a state sheep shearing champion. While in Colorado with her husband, Gret was a first-place champion in racquetball tournaments, skied, and participated in tennis leagues and tournaments. As a life-long parishioner of St. Joseph the Worker Church, Gret served as a Sodality Board Member and religious education teacher.
An outstanding teacher for over 29 years, she was a member of Hanson Kiwanis and the Advisor for the Kiwanis sponsored Hanson Middle School Builders Club, receiving a Kiwanis International Distinguished Service Award in that role. Other achievements demonstrated her ability to work well with students, faculty, and the general community: Gret was selected for a Massachusetts Learning Teacher Leader Award; the Whitman-Hanson Express newspaper featured her as the Hanson Citizen of the Year for 2011; and, she was elected (2004 to present) as a Trustee of the Hanson Public Library Foundation, serving as Secretary. In addition, she represented the University of Rochester as an Admissions volunteer, served as a Channel 2 Auction Volunteer, and also served as Secretary of the Cranberry Cove Boosters.
With her husband, Gret was able to travel the world, as well as the U.S. Throughout her life Gret loved gardening, walking outdoors, and channeling her days as the Red Acres Farm self-proclaimed champion blueberry picker. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, whom she always welcomed into her arms and home with a smile. Her life motto, which she lived every day, was “Be kind to someone who needs it”.
