Mary’s Obituary Schoharie (Schoharie County): Mary J. Stephens 71, of Colby Road Schoharie passed away peacefully on her 30th wedding anniversary, Monday May 27th in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loved one’s. Mary was born April 30, 1948 in Schoharie, a daughter of Marvin and Irene (Rockstroh) Funk. She graduated from Schoharie High School, class of 1967.

She had a long career with NYS Dep’t of Labor as a Key Punch Operator retiring in 2003 after 37 years of service. Mary was a member of the Schoharie Reformed Church and was an avid volunteer with the county Gas Up events and comforted, boarded and assisted many families rebuild after the devastation from hurricane Irene in the village. She enjoyed long rides in the country, camping, outdoor fire pits, fishing, games, cards, gambling and casinos, outside gardening, crocheting, bowling at the Schoharie Lanes, spending the holidays with family and friends and simply being a compassionate caring woman to all those she encountered in her adventures.

Survivors include her husband; James T. Stephens whom she married May 27, 1989, her children; Joseph R. Zeh of Schoharie, Julie A. (Kevin) Palmatier of Summit, her step-children; Margaret (William) Thorington of Fultonham, James (Kimberly) Stephens, Jr. of Elk City, OK, Kerriann (Kent) Kerr of Lockport, NY and Scott T. (Jodi) Stephens of Middleburgh, 5 grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, her sister Patricia A. Pierce of Central Bridge and several nieces and nephews along with her faithful canine best friend, “Luna”. She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Edward and John Funk. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date to be announced.

The Langan Funeral Home of Schoharie and the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home of Cobleskill are assisting the Stephens family.
