Obituary for Mary Nicolls Mary Nicolls, age 88, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her home on 12-27-18. She was preceded in death by her husband, David, parents McKendree and Pauline Tooill, daughter Kathleen, and brother Mac Tooill, Jr. as well as many beloved cats. She is survived by daughter Carol and son-in-law Dean Kauffman, grandson David Kyle Kauffman, granddaughter Lindsay Kathleen Rumple (Bill), great grandsons Camden, 4, and Bennett, 2, sister Carolyn Barton (Tom), many loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends, including Charlie, her favorite cat of all.
Mary sang for her father’s band at age eleven, and joined a trio, performing in Columbus for several years. Mary graduated from North High School in 1947 and attended The Ohio State University for two years, majoring in radio and voice. There she met David Stanley Nicolls, beloved husband until his death in 1991.
When they lived in Poland, Ohio, she was director of Youngstown Children’s Theater, executive secretary for the Youngstown Playhouse, Camp Fire leader, and columnist for the Poland Chronicle. In 1979 she and Dave moved back to Columbus to be near her family. There, she was coordinator for public service announcements at Channel 4 and school secretary at Clintonville Academy.
She attended First Community Church, was a long time member of the Columbus Zoo and Jazz Arts Group. She loved the theater, reading, Jazz Arts, Hocking Hills, Camp Wyandot, Stratford Ecological Center, The Ohio State University, the Columbus Zoo (and all animals), and was dubbed the “cat whisperer” after reviving and helping numerous cats survive and thrive. She was a generous and gracious lady, loved by all who knew her.
Visiting hours will be at Rutherford Funeral Home, 515 High St. Worthington, Ohio 43085, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, January 11th. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 12th, 2019 from 1:00-2:00 PM at the Burkhart Chapel, First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd. , Columbus, Ohio 43212.
Burial will be at Poland Cemetery, Poland Ohio, on a later date. Memorial donations can be made, if desired, to Stratford Ecological Center, Powell, Ohio, Camp Wyandot, Rockbridge, Ohio, or First Community Church, Columbus, Ohio.
