Merle Joan McCarthy, age 88 of Grand Haven, passed away on Monday, July 9, 2018 at a local care facility in Zeeland. She was born on December 22, 1929 to the late Ralph and Gretchen (Haines) Poe in Jackson, MI. She grew up in the Grand Rapids area, and moved to the Grand Haven area in 1948.

She married Charles H. McCarthy on February 25, 1949 in Grand Haven, and they were married for 42 years before his passing in January of 1991. Joan was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and was a former choir member, Bible study student, and Charismatic Prayer Group member. She had a green thumb, and grew many different plants.

Joan also loved arts and crafts, and especially enjoyed painting. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her children; daughters, Diane (John) Lisciandro of Santa Rosa, CA, Laura (David) Deiters of Saxonburg, PA, Colleen (Mark) Gottman of Ypsilanti, MI; sons, Michael (Christine) McCarthy, and Bryan McCarthy, all of Grand Haven; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Allen Poe of Jenison; and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass for Joan will take place on Friday, July 20, 2018 at 11:00 am, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Grand Haven Township Historical Cemetery.
