Obituary for Michael M. Varela Michael M. Varela, age 56, joined His Heavenly Father, May 1, 2018. Born July 3, 1961, he was the son of Leopoldus Sr. and Maria Esperanza “Hope” (Galvan) Varela. His bright cheery smile could light up any room.
Born in Muskegon, “Mike” lived in Hermosa Beach, CA for some time, and spent most of his lifetime where he was born. Mike loved sports, was a proud member of Raider Nation, and devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and Michigan football. He was an avid runner, golfer, and took second in state wrestling in high school.
Mike also enjoyed fishing in his spare time. He loved music and dabbled as a DJ, known as “Mike in the Nighttime”. His favorite pastime was basking in the sun at the beach, boogie boarding, bicycling and cooking gourmet meals.
He retired recently and took great pride working as a postal carrier for 30 years. A free spirit, and gentle soul, he committed his life to helping others. He graduated from Muskegon Catholic Central and attended Muskegon Community College.
He volunteered as a Big Brother and loved his best friend Bailey, cairn terrier. He is survived by his mother, Hope Varela; siblings, Anita Varela (Bill Wilson), Mary (Mike) Fawley, Christine (Greg) Patricio, Rudy (Judy) Varela, and Leopoldus (Mary) Varela; and his former spouse and loving friend, Joan MacMeekin. He is preceded in death by his father, brothers, Mark Varela, Robert Varela, and his dog Bailey.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 11:00am Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception (239 W. Clay Ave. ). VISITATION will be held 5-8pm Tuesday at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., (231) 798-1100 and 10-11am Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church.
