Obituary for Nadine Catherine Hewes (Lewis) CLARK ISLAND at SPRUCE HEAD – Nadine C. Hewes, 87, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Sussman House in Rockport, her loving family was at her side. Born in Friendship, February 13, 1931, she was the daughter of Arthur and Lorna Cushman Lewis. Educated locally, she attended Friendship, Clark Island and Tenants Harbor schools.

Nadine resided in Clark Island for 79 of her 87 years. As a teenager, Nadine began her working career in local fish processing companies, working at Port Clyde Canning, Holmes and Green Island. Later in life, while raising her children, she was employed with Van Baalens, ultimately retiring from the Nautica Corp in 1990.

A very creative person, Nadine enjoyed rock gardening, yard work and painting classes. In her early years she was active in the Wiley’s Corner St. George Grange. Throughout her life she has enjoyed attending and participating in the First Baptist Church of St. George at Wiley’s Corner.

Following her retirement, Nadine kept busy cleaning island homes and serving as a personal care assistant, often assisting people to their doctors’ appointments. She was friendly and outgoing and loved visiting people who didn’t get out and about very often. Going mackerel fishing and spending the night on her son’s boat was another favorite pastime.

Most important to Nadine was her family. They were her number one priority and she was a fiercely devoted, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Each morning she would stand in the window and wave to her niece as she left for work at 6:30 as well as her son and daughter each and every time they left her house.

She will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Predeceased by a sister Bonny Swanson; Nadine is survived by her children, Vernon Lewis and his wife Susan of Union, Valerie Farmer and her husband Charles ‘Chuck’ of Rockport, Bradley Hewes and his wife Lasca of Woolwich; her siblings, Sandra Hyvarinen and her husband Gary of Union, Ramona Johnson, Sheridan Lewis and his wife Linda all of Clark Island; three grandchildren, Justin Lewis, Kristie Beverage and her husband Joel, Heather Fuller and her husband Cliff; four great-grandchildren, Racquelle Haney and her husband Brett, Austin Beverage, James Beverage, Carley Beverage; two great-great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Dax; her former daughter-in-law Manon Lewis of Edgecomb; a step-granddaughter Jade and her son Bradley; as well as many nieces and nephews, including a special niece Renee’ Johnson who helped Nadine a lot. A celebration of Nadine’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Wiley’s Corner Baptist Church, Snow’s Point Road, St. George.

The Reverend Walden Chandler will officiate. A reception will follow immediately at the Craignair Inn. Those who wish may make memorial donations to the Salvation Army, 27 Payne Road, Rockland, Maine 04841.
